Comic analysis

The comic I found is about Beartato and his Bird friend, the moral of the story in the short comic is don't judge others before you know them.  In the comic Beartato is working on his computer and his friend is judging him calling him a nerd but once Beartato leaves his friend finds out he was actually creating a picture of both of them with the words best friends under the picture.  This shows that you should first know what you are talking about before you accidently hurt others feelings for making a silly mistake like calling your friend a nerd for being on his computer since you never know what he is actually doing.  The comic is very short but gets straight to the point to show that being nice to others is always a good thing and will always have good consequences unlike being mean.

Thesis statements

One of the big controversies in our society today is the argument about medical marijuana.  Some say that it would be bad for our society as there would be no more control over people smoking marijuana to get a high.  But on the other side of the argument it is being attempted to be legalized as it is very effective at fighting different kinds of ailments.  Going further into why these two groups think so differently could help find a middle ground so that both groups could get what they hold for right.

Medical Marijuana has been a very controversial topic over the past few years.  Several states have already legalized the use of it but the majority of states have yet to try and legalize it or are still in the process of discussing it.  It could be a very helpful tool in curing many known ailments more efficiently and far more cost efficient than the medicine that is currently on the market.  If more people supported the use of medical marijuana instead of using marijuana to smoke than this could be a great improvement to our current medical system.  There is only the problem currently that most people do use marijuana illegally to get high and therefore many people do not support the legalization of it.

Chapter 26 and 27

Chapter 26 was about creating your own style which was very interesting to me.  Everyone has their own style and some make it work and other don't.  It got me to try and figure out what my style of writing is and how formal it may or may not be or how well I word sentences in my previous essays and see if I could find some sort of pattern among different essays that i've written.  I'm still trying to figure out how I personally write and what I can improve but I would personally say I have a good start for myself in terms of my writing style, there is definitely a lot of room for improvement which I have already found several different points where I could improve.  I will also try and utilize this on project 4, but since it is a research paper it will certainly be formed differently than most essays that I have written.  For the project ill have to make sure to adjust my style of writing not to show bias, which I have found in my previous essays that I do tend to show more bias then is probably good for a research paper. This was a very helpful chapter to read as I can now identify my style of writing and try and improve it to write better essays.

Chapter 14 Strategies for Arguing

When it comes to arguing the goal is usually to try and win and convince someone that you are right.  There are many ways to go about this but some of the best ways are talked about in this chapter.  Usually rhetorical styles help convince people to your side, you also need to make sure that all of your facts are correct since there's no point in arguing if your not even sure yourself if your own facts are correct or not.  If you can also bring in visual pictures of what you are trying to argue than you will be more likely to be able to create the bigger picture for someone else who has different view points.  Create a lot of comparisons and if you can add some humor as it can lighten the mood and help convince people that you are right.

Project 4 topic idea.

  • Whether medical marijuana should be legal or not.
  • What kind of cars should and shouldn't be aloud to be on the roads in the US.
  • Should we work on transferring to electric cars as fast as possible.
Each of these topics could be good as they have strong supporters on both sides, and both sides have good points to make so there could be some way of finding a middle ground in one of these topics to write about.  There are also countless sources to use to help support a case for a research paper.  I will likely try and make a case about medical marijuana as it is currently a growing issue, with several states having already legalized it and many more states are attempting to make cases on why it should be legal.  There will be a lot of information on this topic so it will be tricky to select relevant sources and make sure that sources are from places that have done their own research and this could be a great topic since the for and against arguments of this topic have very clear lines, and some of these lines could be attempted to be broken down in a paper discussing the reasoning of both sides and how there may be compromise.

Work is a Blessing

Yes I do agree with the passage, and the author uses good statements to prove his point.  He uses good rhetoric to strategically convince the audience to the point he is trying to make.  Work really is a blessing because you get to be able to provide for the ones you love.  You can afford luxuries for yourself to make your life better.  By working you help out the entire world by providing your expertise in your field to improve the world and help the community where you are working.  He makes good points about how he finds himself and I feel like I relate to this a little bit, as I worked for a year in Germany.  I still have a lot to learn about working, but I believe ill eventually know fully what the author is talking about when i finish college and find a job.

Rhetoric in the Workplace

Before I came to college, I worked in Germany for a year as an intern to experience what its like to be a mechanical engineer.  I had to submit a resume to try and get accepted, this required showing why I should be chosen for the internship and what my skills are to try and prove that I will be the most successful person for the internship.  After getting accepted I also had to write a two page report every month to explain what I have learned, what I'm not so sure about, and in general what I had accomplished that month, these had to be very accurate or my instructor there would make you write it again.  Looking back at these I realized that I had used rhetoric to try and show everything I had accomplished.  Also learning about these new uses of rhetoric I see that there were also many areas of my writing that could have been improved, which I will certainly use in the future, once I finish college and start applying for work.  This could definitely be very helpful to use in the workplace so that I can prove what I can do in my field of work, and try and win customers over in whatever workplace I end up in.

Project One Essay

For the first project I will be writing about how online streamers are authors, and explain why I believe that its authorship.  I may also try to focus onto some YouTube channels, but this will be on people who stream or create video content for video games.  A difficulty that I am running into is finding sources that talk about these subjects, as most gamers don't talk about their streaming and the things they do, and if they do then its usually in videos, which I will need to learn how to cite properly.  I want to show how the streaming platforms and things like YouTube create an environment that lets people become authors by playing games and creating commentary for this.  The commentary is usually about the game play, just joking around, or even professionals who stream daily.  I play video games on a regular basis and will be focusing on the people who create content for games that I play, since I already know a lot of what I will write about since I have already thought about these things in the past.  I need to also come up with points that I will need to prove which I still haven't thought about yet, to prove that what these people create daily is indeed authorship.  I don't believe that I will run short on the word count, since I believe there are a lot of good points to be made about this topic, since it is very unique and has only started a few years ago, but is growing very rapidly.

Everyone's an Author, chapter 3. Shitty First Drafts

After reading the Shitty First Drafts I was amazed at what the author had to say.  When i would write essays I always spent a ridiculous amount of time on writing a first draft, and afterwards write the essay and be done.  I realized now from the reading that its really not about perfecting your writing until your actually writing the final draft of the essay.  The author mentions that the whole point of the first draft is just getting the ideas to flow so you can get to a better end result, instead of just sitting trying to think of one specific topic and then writing on and on about a specific idea that can only be delved into with so much detail.  Writing has never been one of my strong subjects so this may actually help to improve my writing.  The reading from chapter 3 also mentioned these ideas and how the process of making a final draft is a lot more then just the two steps I had always thought were needed.  It mentions even writing up to three or four drafts before working on your final draft, or to just do a free writing to get some solid ideas for a paper to write about.  I think taking these ideas and applying this to my next essay could greatly improve the scores I get on writing assignments instead of just turning in a second draft, or what I previously thought was my final draft.  Thinking about it, it may even take less time to write three or four drafts before creating a final draft, just because I wont constantly be stuck with writers block, instead I can just focus on just writing and over the course of writing slowly improve the work, instead of straight from the start trying to perfect a writing, and then being lost for ideas.

Chapter 1 and 2, Everyone's an Author

In the first two chapters, the main theme is about Rhetorical wording.  It talks about the ways that it can be used, and how powerful the use of Rhetoric is.  These chapters were very influential and shed new light on the use of Rhetorical structures.  It quotes that human issues can only be dealt with words or war, and it shows many examples on how Rhetoric can be used to deal with issues peacefully.  This amazed me at how effective this type of speech or writing is, one that i had never thought about using when writing essays for class and other subjects.  I'm also impressed how rhetoric is all around us and used every day even though I had really never payed much attention to it.  I think that if I also study further into the use of Rhetoric it definitely be a powerful tool to be used on essays for all of my classes, and then also when I continue a career in my major.  Its definitely an interesting topic that I hope the book continues to delve deeper into this subject.  This book in my opinion is very well thought out from what I read.  It explores themes in an interesting way that also, strangely enough, makes it extremely fun to read.  The quotes that the book uses too are extremely useful to help understand the subject and at explaining the thoughts of the authors to create an easier reading experience.
